Presentation Summary:

The Food chain in EU and US has a complex environment, particularly the need for global engagement nowadays.  While in EU the food chain is highly regulated, in US changes are taking place; a good example is the legislation and implement of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) signed into laws in January 2011.  In EU Food safety “integrated approach” started in Regulation on Food Safety principles in 2002 establishing an independent body for food safety risk assessment called European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

This presentation will cover the following topics:
The main players-stakeholders in the Food Safety area in EU and US;
How EFSA operates in all food safety domains giving scientific advices for the EU regulators;
The role of Risk assessment in food safety in EU and US;
Challenges for the future risk Assessment in both sides of the Atlantic

Examples of the speaker’s prior experience working with residues will illustrate the differences on risk assessment and risk management between EU and US.
