Cybersecurity, Myths, Twists,

and Strategies

by: Bill Neugent of MITRE

Tuesday April 24, 2012

MITRE Fellow Bill Neugent reveals the myth-ful thinking that underlies many military cybersecurity investment decisions and identifies a primary adversary to progress: our own mindsets. The talk clarifies what we know how to do and what we don’t know how to do, and recommends cybersecurity strategies for both situations. Fundamental to cyber defense is the need to see—our adversaries, our systems, ourselves. Whether you’re a security engineer, a systems engineer, or a computer user, this talk will help you see the cybersecurity challenge in a new way.

Bill Neugent is one of only four MITRE Fellows and is Chief Engineer for the 450 cybersecurity experts in MITRE's Cyber Security Division. He advises government leaders on technical and programmatic cybersecurity strategies and has briefed many senior officials on cyber threats. In the 1980s he created and taught a graduate course in cybersecurity at The American University, one of the first such courses in the country. Neugent is also a novelist. His debut novel, No Outward Sign (Writers Club Press), shows a cyberterrorist attack on America. Days after the book's release on Amazon.com, the novel became one of Amazon's 500 best-selling books.
