Model-based Architecture and Engineering

by: Victor Harrison

Tuesday August 27, 2013

Advances in computing platform power have allowed modeling tools to significantly increase the scope of what they can do.   Improvements in modeling specifications from the Object Management Group (OMG), the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), and others have improved the specification of not just computing objects, but the taxonomies and ontologies upon which they are built.  And finally, improvements in the associated price/performance of modeling tools has made it not only technically possible but practical and feasible for organizations to perform model-based architecture and engineering of software and hardware systems - not for just the few, but for the many.  This presentation will describe the characteristics of model-based architecture and engineering with a special emphasis on current approaches for parallel and concurrent engineering, model animation/simulation, test case generation, and logic specification to code generation. If time permits a list of improvements occurring the next 12 months will be overviewed.

Victor Harrison is a partner in CSC’s Federal Consulting Practice and has acted as a practice director, practice architect, and technology director. He is a member of the Board of Directors of OMG and the SOA Consortium; Co-founded the CyberSecurity Consortium and Community of Practice; has been published in magazines as diverse as CIO Magazine and JOOP (Journal of Object Oriented Programming); has spoken at numerous conferences ranging from Gartner’s Architecture and BPM Conferences to INCOSE to the IT Security Automation Conference.  Mr. Harrison is a patent holder; an acknowledged industry expert in enterprise and inter-enterprise SOA; Metadata Driven Environments, Cloud enabled services, Model Driven Architecture; and intrinsically secure architectures.  He has been a CTO for a manufacturing company; an R&D Director for an ERP company; chief architect or chief engineer of numerous large and complex programs; and strategic consultant to over a hundred different organizations ranging from commercial enterprises to federal and state agencies to software vendors.  He has provided advanced architecture and engineering leadership on numerous SOA enabled systems, including enterprises as diverse as the National Counter-Terrorism Center to the Center for Medicaid and Medicare to General Motors and beyond.  His current professional interests include agile engineering in software factories; modeled correctness of distributed, event driven, and non-deterministic systems; CyberSecurity; event-driven SOA; and metadata driven architectures utilizing dynamic ontologies.
